Senior citizens defies age at golf championships

Bank Windhoek Senior Golf Tournament Champion, Barney Duddy (on the right), receiving his trophies from Thinus Prinsloo, executive director of Capricorn Investment Holdings.Senior citizen, Barney Duddy beat a strong field of 32 players to become this year’s winner of the Bank Windhoek Senior Golf Championship that took place on Friday and Saturday last week at the Windhoek Country Club.
Barney Duddy won the tournament by 77 points. He was followed by Gert Goosen and Johnny Adams in second and third places respectively. Duddy was not just the overall champion, he also came first in the over 70 category while Wolfie Trossbash became the over 80 champion.
Also honoured at the event for their efforts were Jan Brand, and Johan du Toit who came in joint fourth place and Jan van Wyk and Jock Orford finishing in joint fifth place.
Speaking at the award giving ceremony, head of the corporate communication and social investment at Bank Windhoek, Riaan van Rooyen said: “Bank Windhoek is committed to supporting sports activities amongst Namibian senior citizens, hence the sponsorship of the event. It is important that every Namibian, young and old keep fit, enjoy life and socialise through sports activities. Bank Windhoek will continue to be associated with  the Senior Golf Championship.”
To qualify as a senior golfer one has to be 55 years old and above, and must be invited to join the Society of Senior Golfers.
