Rhythm &Blues extraordinaire, Floritha at Kalabar
Be sure not to miss the best Rhythm & Blues Namibia has to offer. Upcoming Jazz star, Floritha will again entertain the audience with her soulful renderings at the Kalabar in the Hilton next week Thursday.
One might label her the ‘most recent star rising’ in the Namibian Music Industry. First, she surprised everyone – including the judges when she drew one of two ‘wild cards’ at the NTN 2013 ’Last Band Standing’ competition. This paved the way for her to compete against big names ‘Big Ben’ and ‘Etondo’ in the finals. She and her young band scooped fifth place, which is remarkable, since this was their debut live performance. Then with the song ‘I Owe It All to You’, Floritha clinched the Namibian Music Awards (NAMAs) award for Best R&B 2012/2013.
Floritha is a second year law student at the University of Namibia with an unyielding passion for music. It is striking to see how many fresh talents are emerging from Namibia’s South – in this case from the small Nama village of Gibeon. Floritha has an impressive vocal range, with a natural timbre and a voice that listeners are immediately drawn to. Coming from a pure Gospel background, she has been discovering and nurturing her novel love for R&B and soul. The young Nama girl does not shy away from house music and other genres.
Her album, also called ‘I Owe It All to You’, released at the end of 2012, features amongst others, a Kizomba number ‘By Your Side’. Expect original R&B, soul and African compositions as well as covers by Rihanna, Beyoncé, Adele and the like. Entrance is free. From 17:00 until 19:00, that is before her performance, the Kalabar has ‘happy hour’. Floritha hits the stage at 19:00 and continues with intervals until 21:30. She is accompanied by Ugly Creatures keyboard player Alfie Witbooi.
