Kavango Youth Games on this weekend
Rundu will this weekend host more than 450 athletes competing in various sports codes.
Over the past six weeks, constituency tournaments have been taking place every weekend. The winners of these tournaments now progress to the regional tournament which takes place this Saturday and Sunday in Rundu.
The three partners, who are making the games possible, are eager for the event to start. Sau Mangundu, the Regional Sport Officer and SCORE Namibia’s Community Coordinator for the Region, Jerry Hausiku, are responsible for organising this event.
Jerry explains the rationale behind the games: “It is because we believe Youth Sport for development is fundamental to the early development of children. The skills learned during play and sport, contribute to the holistic development of young people. Throughout participation in sport, young people learn about the importance of key values such as honesty, team work, fair play, respect for themselves and others and adherence to rules.”
The games further seeks to give the opportunity to all parents to witness and see the talent of their children and for them to be part of the games.
Participants will compete in girls and boys soccer, girls netball and mixed volleyball, as well as participate in life skill games facilitated by qualified SCORE sport volunteers. SCORE Namibia is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation using sport and physical activity as a means to provide children and youth with valuable skills and opportunities to contribute positively towards the development of their communities and their lives.
SCORE and the Directorate of Sport within the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture work closely together to provide sport opportunities at the grassroots level.
The event is open to the community, and schools and community clubs are welcome to take part.
