MVA Fund shapes youth drivers

The idea is to adequately prepare the youth for their driving careers by instilling the required skills, attitude and a responsible approach to driving.
Statistics collected by the Fund’s Call Centre show that 245 of the 740 fatalities reported between 2011 and June 2012 were young people between the ages of 16 and 30.
This year the Fund is training 50 youth through Natis centres in various towns. In the Divundu and Kongola constituencies,50 learners were trained in March,of which 25 are from previously disadvantaged members of the San communities
“Our fundamental goal is to increase awareness of risk factors on the road and to prevent road crashes involving young people due to lack of driving experience or knowledge of traffic signs,” said Eliphas Rukambe, MVA Fund’s Manager for Public Education.
The training initiative will be extended to Ongwediva and Katima Mulilo in the near future.
The Fund has appealed to young drivers to practise safe driving habits and not disregard traffic rules. With the right attitude and driving skills. Young people can play their part in creating safer roads in Namibia.
The Fund also strongly discouraged people from buying driver’s or learner’s licenses as they will not have knowledge of the road signs and this puts them and other road users at risk of accidents.
