Bowlers are waiting in anticipation as the yearly Nationals will kick-off this Saturday in Windhoek.
Unlike the local leagues, the contesting players will not go head-to-head in inter-club teams at the week-long tournament in the capital.
This means that the participants make up their own squads, irrelevant of club affiliation.
There is, however, no change in terms of playing categories as the teams will fight for medals in the singles, pairs, triples and foursome divisions.
A special focus will be once again be one “Champion of Champions” category where the top singles players battle it out.

Last year, Will Esterhuizen from TransNamib Bowiling Club (TNBC) and Diana Viljoen form the Swakopmund-based Rossmund Bowling Club (RBC) emerged victories in the men’s and women’s “Champion of Champions” division respectively. For Esterhuizen, who also came out on top in the regular singles division, it was the third victory in this prestigious category in a row.
Meanwhile Sheena du Toit from Eros Bowling Club (EBC) is the player to watch out for in the singles division as she took top honors last year by beating Marie van der Merwe (Windhoek Country Club) in a nail-baiting final.
The doubles title in the men’s competition was taken by the father-son-combination of Douw and Jurie Calitz, while Heleen Rust and Erna Muller formed the most successful ladies pair.
Esterhuysen, Johan Jacobs and Otto Krauhenbull set the pace in the triples category. Amongst the female competitors, Jean Joubert, Sheena du Toit and Lesley Vermeulen were in a class of their own.
The four-men-team of Tollie Cronje, Ewald Vermeulen, Piet Appollis and Axel Krauhenbull went all the way to lift the trophy in the foursome discipline of the championships. Jean Joubert, Sheena du Toit, Lesley Vermeulen and Mandie Steenkamp accomplished this achievement in the ladies’ competition.
The tournament will begin with the men’s and women’s pair’s divisions this Saturday at the Eros Bowling Club and the Windhoek Country Club. The games will continue throughout the week and come to an conclusion with the finals taking place at the TransNamib Bowling Club come month end.
