Literacy programme awarded UNESCO prize

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on the recommendation of an international jury, has awarded the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy 2013 to the Namibia National Literacy Programme following the submission and motivation by the Directorate of Adult Education in the Ministry of Education.
The international jury, in making the recommendation to UNESCO highly commended the determination of the National Literacy Programme in Namibia to provide basic education to disadvantaged adults and out-of-school youth with a view to improve their quality of life and to enable them to contribute to community and national development.
The award ceremony for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes will be held on 9 September 2013 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris during International Literacy Day celebrations in conjunction with the Collegium titled: ‘Literacies for the 21’st Century.
The award of the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literary which Namibia will receive, consists of a silver medal, a diploma and a cheque of US$20,000.
