Regional council, local authorities election preparations on course – official

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Tuesday said that the preparations for the 2020 Regional Council and local authority elections are progressing well and are on course.

ECN’s Chief Electoral Officer, Theo Mujoro said the Commission has finalised the preparations for the next phase of the electoral process, which is the nomination of candidates and the display of the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) for the forthcoming elections.

“The period of the submission of candidates for the elections commenced today, 29 September and will be concluded on 16 October,” he added.

According to Mujoro, 16 October has been determined as the date on which returning officers in the 121 constituencies and 57 local authority areas receive the submissions for candidates and party lists for a member of the regional council and the members of a local authority.

Furthermore, he said the last date for submission of nomination in the case of political parties, associations or organizations is 16 October.

Mujoro meanwhile said the ECN successfully concluded the supplementary registration of voters that was held from 7 to 15 September, and the PVR for the 2020 upcoming elections will be displayed for inspection and lodging of objections from 30 September to 5 October.

Regional councils and local authorities form an integral part of the democratic governance system of Namibia and elections are conducted every five years. This year’s elections are scheduled for November, amid COVID-19.
