Young faces at Tennis Series

Codie van Schalkwyk showed outstanding performances at the fourth tournament of the Kia Pro Tennis Series 2013 and cruised to a first place finish in the advanced group. The second best player in this competition was Dario Noabeb. The youngster from Otjiwarongo caused a couple of upsets, as he managed to outclass Oliver Diggle (7-5) and tip the scale to his favour in a marathon match against his town rival Andy Jantze with a 7-6 win. As a result of his massive improvement over the past few months Waylon Wentzel secured the bronze medal.
At intermediate level ,winner Conner van Schalkwyk made clear that he is a force to be reckoned with in the future of Namibian tennis. The overall very consistent Denise Murorua came second, while Deonetto Dirkse completed the podium thanks to his tremendous fighting spirit. The pupil from St. Paul’s College won three of his four matches in tie break encounters. Other promising players from St. Paul’s were Edward Shiimi, Logino Goraseb and Sean Lukas.
“It’s a pleasant surprise to see new faces like these youngsters, who take the initiative to enter the tournaments thereby developing their talent and meeting other competitors with the same interest and heart for the game of tennis”, commented event organiser Elizma Nortje.
Kayden Schnelle took top honours in the beginners group by beating Revaldo Gertze 4-3 (7-5) in the final. The eight-year-old Jaco Becker proved to be a tough competitor and displayed his great talent, as he won the bronze medal.
