FNB Classic Clashes 2013 launched

The 2013 Classic Clashes games were launched in Windhoek, this week. The launch took place at St Paul’s College, where the guests were welcomed by the school principal,  Mrs Becky Njoze-Ojo.
The national co-ordinator of Namibia School Sports Union, Solly Duiker, gave an overview and background of the Classic Clashes. “The Classic Clashes is a competition in sports between rival schools which was started in 2008, an Initiative of FNB Namibia,” said Duiker. “The event is aimed at developing the sports amongst the youth.” This year’s event will see 14 schools participate in three different sports codes namely Rugby, Netball and Football.
FNB has been the main sponsor of the event since its initiation in 2008. The CEO of FNB Namibia , Ian Leyenaar, said that the reason behind their continued support is that the project has increased performance levels of the learners within sports. Leyenaar further stated that he hoped that scholars talents will be noticed and one day create a strong national team.
This year’s event attracted new sponsorships from Namib Mills, to the tune of N$300 000, as well as from Max Namibia, with a subsidy on the purchased mouth guards. Reverend Ludwig Hausiku special advisor to the Minister of  Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture delivered the key note address. In his speech, he thanked FNB Namibia for their continued support  of the initiative of Classic Clashes as well as the new sponsors.
The first game of Classic Clashes 2013 will take place in Keetmashoop between Suiderlig High School and J.A Niell High school. While the last game will be between Academia Secondary School and Augustenium Secondary School on September 20, in Windhoek.
