The tournament kicked off with competitions in the mini and midi categories on Friday, last week and continued with the beginners, intermediate and advanced categories on Saturday. “The competitiveness, depth and quality of the matches in each category made this tournament outstanding; and the improvement of the players from the previous tournament was remarkably visible,” says PTA director and head coach, Elizma Nortje.
The mini tennis category was divided into two groups with Madeleen Maritz (80 points) as the surprise winner in the first group. Jana Weyers (75 points) took second place, while Munel Meyer (71 points) came in third. In the second group of the mini category, Japhet Haarmann (87 points) again walked away with the gold medal, while Tangeni Nuulimba (84 points) took silver. Dezi Murorua (83 points) earned the bronze medal with only one point difference to Murorua.
The full court event on Saturday saw Ulriato Laurence as king of the court in the Beginners category and the eight year old Conner van Schalkwyk as runner up. “That demonstrates the beauty and uniqueness of this tournament and system: a talented youngster such as Conner can compete against older players that compliment his standard of play and give him a broader exposure to improve his talent,” says Nortje.
KIA Motors and Wimpy are the main sponsors of the KIA PTA Tennis Series.
