The two legal bodies concerned with the physical planning of modern communities and conserving natural and built-up environments, the Namibian Institute of Town and Regional Planners (NITRP) and the Namibian Council of Town and Regional Planners (NCTRP) announced the recently elected office-bearers at their last Annual General Meeting. At its last Annual General Meeting, the Namibian Institute of Town and Regional Planners’ elected the following as from November 2013 – November 2014 as office bearers of the institute: President: Petrine Moongela; Vice President: Hilia Hitula; Secretary: Harold Kisting; Treasurer: Hennie Fourie; and Publicity & Information Officer: Edwin Thornley (past president). In a media release, Publicity and Information bearer Edwin Thornley stated “The institute comprises professional planners within the public, private and academic sectors aiming to promote and uphold the science and art of town and regional planning within Namibia. This institute was instrumental in having the Town & Regional Planners Act 1996 promulgated by Government.” “The same Act enables the establishment of the Namibian Council for Town and Regional Planners and also regulates the registration of Town and Regional Planners and Town and Regional Planners in Training in Namibia,” he added. Meanwhile, at the AGM, the following members are to serve as office bearers on the Namibian Council of Town and Regional Planners for a two year term as from November 2013 to November 2015: the new President Browny Mutrifa, Vice President Charles Tubalike, Registrar & Secretary Ritta Khiba, Treasurer Ernst Simon and member Johan de Kock. The council consist of professional planners elected by the institute as well as the Honourable Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development. “One of the main functions of the council is to ensure that each member adheres to the Rules of Conduct and that the interest of the general public are being protected from misconduct, conflict of interest or malpractice by any of the practising members as well as registering professional Town and Regional Planners and Town and Regional Planners in Training,”he said. Thornley stated that the purpose of the notice of the office bearers was to inform the public of the two governing bodies dealing with Town and Regional Planning in the country.
