Special Day of the Old Wheelers

Old Land Rovers always capture the spirit of the Wild Southwest. Landies are a favourite collectors item and there are usually many of them at the Old Wheeler events.

This weekend, nostalgia reigns supreme when the Old Wheelers’ Club celebrate their annual Day of the Old Wheelers.
The event is hosted on Saturday, 04 October at the Old Wheelers Clubhouse off Stadion Street in Suiderhof in Windhoek. Standard Bank Vehicle & Asset Finance is the principal sponsor of “The Day of the Old Wheeler 2014.”
This week the Old Wheelers Club announced the event saying “We’re back with a bigger and better event and you are all invited. Don’t RSVP, just come.” The Day starts at 11:00 and carries on until late. The club said “We celebrate our 12th Day of the Old Wheeler and open our doors to Windhoek residents and Namibia at large. It is with a great sense of pride and gratitude, that we acknowledge our sponsors and members alike for their generosity and tireless efforts prior to, during and currently, for the financing and development of our new club house facilities.” Work on the new clubhouse started in January last year with the laying of the cornerstone. Just over a year on, in February this year, it was officially inaugurated.

The club now operates from their new clubhouse and has managed to attract a new generation of members. Describing the Day of the Old Wheelers, club secretary Brigitte Reissner said, “As in the past, an exciting day lies ahead, commencing with the Independence Avenue “street procession”, a wide cross-section of old vehicles on display, a beer tent, good food and beverages, activities for children, contemporary music, and ample parking with security”. Visitors also have the opportunity to buy their own Old Wheelers’ Club shirts, blouses, caps and stickers. The highlight of the Day is the traditional raffle for a classic in its own right, a 1956 Nash/Austin Metropolitan. “Standard Bank Vehicle & Asset Finance, our sponsor since the inception of this event during 2001 have graciously agreed to support this important annual automotive event, with a difference and a great sense of history.” “The Old Wheelers Club of Namibia especially wishes to engage the next generation of old-timer enthusiasts, with an invitation to “talk technical”, share experiences and simply enjoy each other’s company. Mom’s and Dad’s, bring your children and an old car and you could enjoy the opportunity of winning a club membership for a member of your family.”
