The traditional, annual Ladies Day Namibia Tennis Association tournament was held on World Cancer Day on 12 October at the Central Tennis Club in Olympia. The FNB Foundation supported this event with an amount of N$15,000 and all funds raised go towards the Namibia Cancer Association.
Ingrid Goeieman, Manager Sponsorships of FNB Namibia said “Not only does FNB support sporting activities in Namibia of which tennis is one main recipient but we also advocate for a healthy body and mind and what better way to do this by combining sport and awareness of cancer.”
The tournament brought together 24 local women tennis players to support the event’s theme of cancer awareness. The event commenced with a cocktail function hosted jointly by the various sponsors at the Central Tennis Stadium club on the Friday before the tournament. The keynote speaker Ms Elzette Otto spoke on the importance of nutrition to maintain a healthy life style.
The winning team in the red group was Melissa Gilles and partner Jolanda Amoraal who had a stronger defence than Moizelle Barnard and Sonja Martins. In the second group Alet Laubscher partnered with Corne Steenkamp and beat runner-ups Kirsten Schreiber and MaryBeth Gallagher by a tight margin of only two points.
During the prize giving ceremony NTA CEO Laurie Pieters thanked the numerous sponsors as well as the organizing committee consisting of Rihetta Swart and Melissa Gilles. Pieters said their efforts contributed to the day’s outstanding success.
