Macmillan changes name, continues publishing tradition

Macmillan Education Namibia, has re-established itself in the local market by announcing its name change. The company will in future be known as Namibia Publishing House, a true Namibian publishing company, continuing the proud tradition started by its founder, Hermann van Wyk. The company has undergone many name changes since its establishment more than 30 years ago.
The company started out with only two titles in African languages and now proudly offers more than 1800 titles. Namibia Publishing House said it will still focus on publishing quality textbooks for Namibian schools and will also continue to publish titles written by Namibian authors and poets for the general book trade.
Although parting company with the old, well-known Macmillan, the company could take pride in launching their last publication under the Macmillan name. The book Farming in Namibia: Agricultural Development and Practical Technology in Africa which was written by Jeanne Zheng, a Chinese agriculturist who had worked in the north of Namibia and used her knowledge and expertise to teach the local people about growing vegetables.
“Information and knowledge are, in my view, strictly speaking only relevant, meaningful and useful when they are discussed and shared with others. On the other hand information and knowledge that are not discussed and shared with others could or may be characterised as meaningless, unhelpful, useless and sterile,” said Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, Hon. John Mutorwa during the book launch.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Xin Shunkang talked about the contribution China is making towards agricultural and other development in Namibia and that there is great potential for further expanding trade and economic cooperation. “Such cooperation on an equal and mutually beneficial basis in not only conducive to the economic development of our two countries but also beneficial to the well-being of our two peoples as we work together in this way, we will ensure a sound and stable China Namibia relationship in the years and decades to come,” said Shunkang.
