Namibia Breweries, which has been part of the Windhoek Lager Fish River Marathon for the past two years says it is delighted with the growth of this event in such a short time.
Daniel Keulder, Sponsorship Event Manager at NBL said: “Windhoek Lager is a global brand and we thus align it to internationally recognized events such as African Extreme Promotion’s endurance events.
“We are extremely proud that the Windhoek Lager Fish River Marathon has grown from 9 to 27 runners this year. Ryan Sandes, a renowned South African ultra-marathon runner will attempt to break the existing record of 10 hours 54 minutes held by three Namibians. This year will also see runners from Sweden and the UK competing.”
This year’s marathon starts on 28 July at the hiker’s descent and it will be 96 km long with four checkpoints before the end in Ai-Ais. Runners have 24 hours in which to complete the race. The race starts at 06:00 on Saturday.
Organizers are considering bringing in a 60km race as well next year, which they hope, could increase the number of participants.
“We are excited about this sponsorship and look forward to this coming weekend,” Keulder added.
