(Photograph contributed)Afro-Jazz singer, Erna Chimu, will grace the stage at the Goethe Centre this Friday. The talented artist will entertain the crowd with her fusion of Afro-Jazz, and will be joined by an equally talented artist, Flora.
Erna has been in the Namibian music industry for a while and has shared the stage with the likes of South African Jazz artists, Lira and Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse. She performed with the renowned artists at the Old Mutual Jazz Encounter in 2008. Erna also performed alongside the famous band, Freshly Ground in 2010 at the Old Mutual Jazz Encounter. She was also second runner up in the 2010 ‘Last band standing’ competition.
Erna was part of reggae force, Shemyetu but in 2007, decided to embark on a solo career.
She finally got recognition for her hard work when she won the award for the Best Traditional song at the 2011 Namibian Music Awards for ‘Telewaniba’ from her album ‘Imamakunguwe’.
The singer’s overwhelming desire to bring the Damara-Nama language back on stage in a way that will be understood is the one that led her to her own fusion of Afro-Jazz.
For a jazz filled evening with mellow tunes and a mature splash of Damara-Nama music, jazz lovers should make their way to the Goethe Centre. The concert starts at 19h15. Entrance is N$40.
