City of Windhoek rehabilitates existing infrastructures to curb the spread of diseases
The City of Windhoek this week said that it is in the process of rehabilitating existing infrastructures especially toilets in the informal settlements.
The City fathers in a statement said they identified 330 communal toilets and most of the have been repaired and are working properly, while the rest are expected to be completed mid-February.
Lydia Amutenya, Public Relations Officer at the City said an additional 20 toilets are being procured in this regard and a kilometre sewer line has been unblocked in Havana.
“The extension of the main pipeline for portable water has started in Goreangab and so far about 5km of 7km is completed and 5 new stands pipes were installed, 9 stand pipes repaired, leaks continue to be attended,” she informed.
She explained that the extension of the main water pipeline will allow the installation of more standpipes in these areas that did not have access to portable water in the past, therefore allowing residents to walk not more than 1km to the nearest portable water point.
She informed that a cleaning up campaign in the informal settlement is underway. “We are also sampling water to ensure safe portable water is an ongoing exercise, donation of hand washing units and hand sanitizers mainly to the markets and vendors are requested to encourage their clients to make use of these units in order to keep their hands clean,” she concluded.
