Cycle Challenge expects big turnout

The 2016 ‘The Namibian Pick n Pay Cycle Classic’ will see its largest number of participants in the history of the annual fundraising event hosted by the Rotary Club Windhoek (RCW), with Pick n Pay (PnP) Namibia and The Namibian Newspaper as key sponsors.
RCW project Cycle Classic convener, Danny Meyer said, “by popular request the closing date for entries was extended to Tuesday 4 October. Although the manual entries are still being processed according to our cycling race technical partner, Windhoek Pedal Power (WPP) the number of road bike race entries already exceeded 600. So with the mountain bike and Kiddies Classic entries added, projections the number is likely to be around 1200 in total. This represents an increase of more than 12 percent over last year.”
Registration and collection of race numbers takes place at SKW in Olympia on Friday, 7 October between 17:00 and 19:00 for both the mountain bike (MTB) and road bike (RB) races, while participants in the RB category can also register and collect their race numbers on Saturday, between 11:30 to 13:30.
Entries for the Kiddies Classic race will be accepted between 10:00 and 12 noon on Saturday before the event that aims to introduce cycling as a fun sport to youngsters, kicks-off. Children of all ages are welcome. Even the little ones who will need a hand or push from mom, dad or grandparents.
Concluded Meyer, “despite the predictions of economic headwinds and a slowdown of Namibia’s economy with some saying that no enterprise in the country will be spared, sponsorships from corporate firms is encouraging. Resultantly needy causes, charities and community service organizations around the country will again benefit from proceeds generated from this year’s edition of Cycle Classic. The three water points at the MTB race and the six at the RB race are all fully sponsored. In addition, ten other firms have joined the country’s favourite supermarket chain, Pick n Pay and The Namibian newspaper, as key sponsors.”
