The new chairperson of the Bankers Association of Namibia, Ian Leyenaar

Ian Leyenaar, CEO of FNB Namibia Group, has assumed the responsibility of Chairman of the Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN) effective from 01 April 2014. This position rotates annually amongst the heads of the current five commercial banks.
Leyenaar: “I am taking over from Mpumzi Pupuma, MD of Standard Bank and want to thank him and his team for the leadership over the last year. I look forward to my year in office and know that a number of exciting issues await us in the banking industry. One of the issues touched on already in this week’s media has been bank charges and transparency around these. We will also continue with our objective to ensure that more, if not all, Namibians have access to banking and can afford banking services as we remain committed to offer a safe, secure and affordable banking environment in our country.”

The Bankers’ Association of Namibia was established in 1997, in accordance with the Banking Institutions Act, as the representative trade association for the commercial banking sector in the country. The over-arching objective is to provide a forum for the consideration of policy matters impacting on the Namibian banking industry and to provide a forum for member banks to discuss common concerns and issues. It also acts as a medium for communication with government, the Bank of Namibia as regulator, and other public bodies and authorities, by engaging with them on matters affecting the different activities of banks. In addition, through the BAN, members deal with non-competitive issues that are of common interest and of significance to the banking industry in Namibia.
