Brewing big ideas at a local level

Local ideas are worth spreading as evidenced by the work of TEDx Windhoek, and organisation that will in March host the inaugural local TEDx event under the theme “Unleashing Potential” in Windhoek. According to Alisa Amupolo, convener of the event, the inaugural event seeks to inspire a new generation of thinkers engaging responsibly with Namibia and with the world. TEDx Windhoek is a programme of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a ‘TED-like’ experience where live speakers and video talks play a pivotal role in sparking deep discussions and connections in a small group. The TEDx Windhoek event is operated under license from TED, a non-profit organization devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ which started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago.

TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives  Amupolo said such an event brings together people that have found or are seeking innovative approaches. She added that the event fosters an environment for embracing passion and commitment for the country and the continent at large “We are excited to host such an event. As a non-profit event organized, and entirely run by volunteers, we are looking at bringing phenomenal people, doing phenomenal things from across multidisciplinary backgrounds and from places we have never imagined in one place,” Amupolo said. The TEDx Windhoek event will see eight live speakers giving lectures or performances ranging from six to 18 minutes. Up to about 100 attendees from a mix of Scientists, Thinkers, Innovators, Students,Designers, Inventors, Marketers, Entrepreneurs, Decision Makers, Politicians are expected to attend the event. Currently speaker nominations are running online on the TEDx Windhoek website until the end of the week and participants who appreciate the TEDX Windhoek concept can purchase tickets at least a month before the start of the event.
