First lady of Namibian boxing

Female boxer, Marney Shenxane.

Female boxer, Marney Shenxane.

A relatively newcomer to the boxing world, Marney Shenxane is the only female boxer in the Nestor Sunshine Boxing & Fitness Academy stable.
Shenxane, who began her boxing career early last year, says boxing is not meant for the faint hearted “because it is a one-man sport. Winning or losing a fight depends on you as an individual and I love that as it keeps pushing me and testing my strengths.”
Shenxane has been training under the wings of Nestor Tobias since the beginning of her boxing career in January last year.
Born and bred in Windhoek, her greatest achievement to date was winning her first and only boxing match as it motivated her to become even more serious with the male dominated sport.
She said:“Winning my very first fight and still being in the sport is something to be proud of as it is not for the soft hearted or slow minded.”
Although she has only had one fight, she believes in her capabilities as one of the few female boxers’ in the country. Shenxane is soon set to have her second boxing match against a Nampol female boxer at the Mariental Stadium.
Although she would like to have matches regularly, she says the lack of female boxers in the country is a challenge
“Another constraint is the lack of attention from the boxing board and promoters as their attention is solely dedicated to male boxing.”
Shenxane dreams of becoming the top female boxer in the country and in the world. The 25-year old said that her iron punches, her will to succeed and her dedication to training will help her in realising her dream. She trains six-days a week with her male counterparts at the academy which she finds very thrilling.
