Ten players picked for international chess events

The Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) recently selected 10 players consisting of five men and five women to represent the country at international events, including the 12th African Games.

The men players are Dante Beukes, Charles Eichab, Heskiel Ndahangwpo, Leonard Mueller and Jossy Uapingene, while the women players include Nicola Tjaronda, Lishen Mentile, Rauha Shipindo and Magdalena Valombola.

They all performed outstandingly but only the best were selected in the end, NCF president Israel Shilongo said on Tuesday.

“It was a challenging yet a fruitful and fun weekend. Players come from all over the country to take part in the selection tournament. We have seen the sport grown over the years and I am satisfied with the turnout of the players. It was very exciting because some of the games played by the veterans lasted for hours,” he said.

Those players will also represent Namibia at the 12th African Games, formerly known as the All-Africa Games or the Pan African, to be held in Morocco from 23 August to 3 September this year.

Experience has taught us that companies usually want their sport sponsorships published prominently, being the reason for a sports category. It now also carries general sport items but only those with direct Namibian relevance. - Ed.
