Squash tournie sees epic battles between top national players

All eyes were on the Klein Windhoek Squash Club last weekend when Namibia’s two top-ranked squash players, Andrew Forrest and Norbert Dörgeloh met for the first time for a showdown on the court.

The much anticipated game was the final in the A Division after three days of tournament squash in the Alexander Forbes Squash Open hosted by the Klein Windhoek squash club.

Third in the A Division was Clifford de Witt who won in straight games against Sven Grüttemeyer, 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-9).

The tournament was described as a mayor success for Namibian squash as the stands were packed with spectators on all three nights. The players did not disappoint, showing the spectators what high-level squash is all about.

Defending champion Forrest said, “…it was the toughest tournament draw on club level I have experienced in six years”.

Amongst the 48 entries were the top sixteen Namibian squash players and many junior players.

The finals kicked off with a spectacular D Division Final in which Bradley Morkel played against Franco Lambert to win 3-2 (11-13, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-2). Pieter Meuwesen won against junior player Curtis Kriel to take the third spot.

Newcomer Thilo Himmel made his mark in the C Division Final by winning against Apie Loubser 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-6). Julie Rusch took the third place.

In a closely contested and tough B Division Final, Stockley van Horsten defeated Lida-Marie Calitz 3-2 (7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6). The B Division 3rd place went to Marissa Jordaan who won against Danie Grobler, 3-1 (11-3, 11-4, 4-11, 11-8).

After the tournament, the The Klein Windhoek Squash Club thanked the tournament committee, all helping members and tournament director Daniël Conradi for a superb event. The club also thanked main sponsor Alexander Forbes for their continuous support, and smaller sponsors Windhoek Draught, SPICE, Document Warehouse, InTouch Interactive Marketing, Rent-a-Drum and Jonno’s Bistro.

Experience has taught us that companies usually want their sport sponsorships published prominently, being the reason for a sports category. It now also carries general sport items but only those with direct Namibian relevance. - Ed.
