New Pro-Vice Chancellor appointed at University of Namibia

09 December 2016 – The University of Namibia announced that Professor Frednard Gideon is the designated new Pro-Vice Chancellor: Academic Affairs. He assumes his new role as of 03 January 2017. The appointment is effective for a term of five years.

The tenure of the incumbent, Prof Osmund Mwandemele, ends on 31 December 2016. The university applauded him in a statement for his countless contribution to the institution’s success.

The office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs serves as the Vice-Chancellor’s Chief Advisor and Assistant on academic matters. It provides strong academic leadership to foster high standards of excellence in teaching, research and publication in all faculties, academic centres and the university library. It also includes developing academic programmes and curricula responsive to the socio-economic development needs of Namibia.

Prof Gideon, a University of Namibia graduate, is the Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science. He obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics (Banking & Finance – Risk Management and Basel II), from North-West University in South Africa. He also read an MSc in Mathematics at Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape.

“Prof Gideon has commendable leadership qualities, and has served the university for several years in various capacities, his latest position being the Dean of the Faculty of Science” stated Mr Edwin Tjiramba, the university’s director of Communications and Marketing.
