New volunteers with rational exuberance

These 49 excited and eager new Peace Corps volunteers from the United States arrived on Wednesday this week. Another single volunteer arrives in a week’s time taking the total number of new volunteers to 50. Counting those Peace Corps volunteers already working in Namibia, the crops’ ranks have now swelled to 120 volunteers. The new intake goes through a nine-week training programme before they are placed with their host families across the whole country. A volunteer stays for two years helping in education and small enterprise development. The project is a partnership between various NGOs, the Embassy of the United States and the Ministry of Education. The first Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Namibia shortly after Independence and to date, some 1500 volunteers have contributed to local education and development. (Photograph by Comfort Ajibola)
