High standards ensure meat exports
Meatco has consistently received top honours at the annual PMR awards, a perception-based awards ceremony where industry leaders, determined by peer opinion, are recognised.
The 2012 PMR awards again confirmed Meatco as Namibia’s leading meat processor and abattoir – a compliment supported by certifications from various leading, international standards bodies.
Apart from the ISO 9001 and HACCP certifications for food quality and food safety systems which Meatco holds since 2000, and the European Union (EU) standards that the company consistently complies with, Meatco has also been certified by the internationally recognised British Retail Consortium (BRC) since April 2010.
The BRC standards are globally recognised for its rigour and excellence. It comprises of industry-leading technical standards that specify compliance requirements with regards to benchmarks in production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and other consumer products. Animal welfare, corporate social responsibility and ethical labour policies are also scrutinised by the BRC.
A BRC audit is conducted annually at Meatco by international, independent auditing firm SAI Global. Meatco is also endeavouring to meet the Global G.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practice) standard through SAI Global. Global G.A.P. standards promote food safety, sustainable production methods, responsible water use and regard for the welfare of workers and animals.
Additionally Meatco is subject to the requirements of a number of premium clients acquired over recent years that not only demand the highest standards in food quality and safety, but also places strong emphasis on social responsibility, good governance, animal welfare, sound environmental practices and fair labour practices. Examples of these clients are Woolworths, ASDA in the UK, Swedish and Danish Co-ops, Norsk Polar in Norway and Heinz – including Heinz baby food which has some of the strictest food safety and quality standards in the world. Meatco is one of few select companies in the world chosen to deliver to Heinz baby food.
