One of the most affordable and reliable half tonners, the Chevrolet Utility, has become synonymous with workhorse capability and car-like comfort. Its market impact is underscored by its sales figures, showing it to be one of most popular small bakkies in the local market.
Chevrolet designed the Utility to be as cost-effective and low maintenance as it is rugged when rolling up its sleeves and getting things done. Since the launch of the initial model in 1997, businesses and ambitious, fun-loving drivers have embraced the Utility as the ideal mate for both work and play. Dealers have been flooded with orders since the new model’s launch in December 2011. Even with its impeccable reputation for quality, comfort and durability, General Motors made numerous improvements to the six-time Synovate Best Quality Award-winning bakkie. The Utility’s sculpted body has been lifted a further 17mm to increase ground clearance to 170mm. Payload capacity for the 1.4-litre model is now at a staggering 763kg and 733kg for the 1.8-litre model. The new Diesel model also represents another step forward in cost-effectiveness. Its 1.3-litre diesel engine produces a punchy 55kW at 4000rpm and torque of 170Nm at 2500rpm while keeping fuel consumption to an astonishingly low 5.5 litres per 100km General Motors also increased the width of the loading bay by 24mm to 1340mm to achieve the greater loading capacity while all-round visibility has also been improved by sacrificing only 2mm on the length and 13mm on the depth of the load area. The further improved visibility from the new heightened “in-command” seats and the contoured rear fender assists the driver when manoeuvring into confined spaces and positioning the vehicle for optimal loading convenience. Access to the load area has also been made easier by the large side step that highlights the vehicle’s stylishly functional design. The modern elliptical headlights are pulled back from the body colour bumper to the crisp lines that define the efficient workhorse as unmistakably Chevrolet. The modern rear light clusters give the vehicle an elegant finish while fog lights on the Club and Sport models add extra muscle in the lighting department. The vehicle comes with a 5 year or 120 000km warranty and roadside assistance.
