The visit by the British Navy vessel, the HMS Portland early this week not only lead to a flurry of on-board festivities in the harbour, but also to several excursions to the Walvis Bay community.
As part of their community outreach the crew of the Royal Navy HMS Porltand, accompanied by members of the British High Commission, gave a helping hand to the Walvis Bay Kids Haven Children’s Home, a safe haven and home for 30 abused and vulnerable children.

Kids Haven was identified as a local community project worthy of the support of the High Commission, and of the attention of the HMS Portland’s crew. The British High Commission donated the construction of a playground valued at around N$10,000 on the school’s premises while the crew of the ship painted the play ground structures and surrounding walls in joyful colours on 31 March, finally handing it over to the children and management of the Walvis Bay Kids Haven. Fruit n Veg City and Plascon co-sponsored the project.
