Striving for change
The Hage Geingob Secondary School will host its first ever Pregnancy Awareness Week from 6 to 10 February.
The week-long programme is aimed at involving the community and other stake holders in finding a solution to teenage pregnancies and is the brainchild of Delphia Jimmy, a life skills teacher at the Katutura situated school.
Last year, between six and seven of her learners dropped out of school as a result of pregnancies says Jimmy. It is in light of this that she came up with the idea of a teenage pregnancy awareness campaign so that other learners can be educated as well as to involve parents in the fight against teenage pregnancies.
Jimmy says the event is aimed at the whole community and other schools, not only Hage Geingog Secondary.
The event will involve guest speakers, who will talk to parents as well as the learners in the hope that the discussions will lead to action. Various NGO’s will be part of the initiative, such as the Star for life project as well as the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Namibia (FAWENA).
