The General Manager for Strategic Planning & Development at Jimmey Construction, Dr Jacko Koen told the Economist this week that the builders’ holiday will not have an effect on the date set for completion of the Westlane Shopping Complex which is set to open its doors to the public in August 2014.

“We did factor the builders’ holiday into the programme from the start and we are happy that the project is on schedule for the grand opening in the third quarter of next year. Our next major milestone is to cast the first quadrant of the 7200 m2 slab before the builders’ holiday”, said Koen.
The shopping mall is conveniently located on the corner of Scheppmann Street and David Hosea Meroro Road (previously Hochland Road) with high visibility and access from both roads. The estimated N$80 million shopping centre is a mixed-use development that includes retail and office space as well as a sizeable number of attractive two-bedroom apartments.
The retail area is approximately 4700 square metres and provides space for an anchor tenant and 16 line shops, ranging from 14 to 250 square metres. The anchor tenant is a Spar supermarket that will occupy retail floor space of approximately 2400 square meters. Three office areas ranging from 80 to 105 square meters in extent is provided, one floor above the retail floor. There is also provision for four ATM banking outlets, a car wash and storage space. According to Koen they have not encountered any major or unforeseen challenges with the construction since it commenced. “It is a challenging project that we have carefully planned and prepared for and is managing directly” he said. So far approximately 230 people are employed for the various aspects of this project.
