Husab developer supports government drought relief efforts

The Swakop Uranium Foundation this week announced it has responded to the government’s call for assistance to thousands of drought victims by donating an amount of N$100,000 to the government’s Drought Relief fund. This fund assists communities who are severely affected by drought conditions with money to buy basic foods and staple to survive until the onset of the next wet season.
The severe drought that started late last year, has had a significant effect on agriculture and people’s ability to survive. Rural communities that live from their own subsistence farming, are most affected as only about 40% of normal food production, was harvested in February and March.
The contribution from the Swakop Uranium Foundation was handed over to the Prime Minister,  the Right Honourable Dr Hage Geingob, by the Chairman of the Swakop Uranium Board of Directors, Mr Zhiping Yu and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Namibia, Mr Xin Shunkang.
Steven Ambabi, Chairperson of the Swakop Uranium Foundation Trust, said the decision to contribute to the Relief Fund, was not a difficult one. “Swakop Uranium is extremely concerned about the drought and we hope that our contribution will go some way to alleviate human suffering, which is one of the key focus areas of the trust.”
He said mines such as Swakop Uranium’s Husab mine are much bigger than just holes in the ground. “We have a sustainability mindset to ensure that society in general benefits from extractive industries. During times of need such as the worst drought in 30 years, we have an obligation to our fellow citizens which goes beyond our normal sponsorship activities.”
