Basic income grant to be re-launched

The Basic Income Grant (BIG) Coalition of Namibia will be hosting a live streaming of the BIG Campaign Relaunch, on 8 September at 15:00, Zoom Meeting ID:892 3198 3086, Passcode:887016.

The coalition said they are doing this to achieve the urgent implementation of the universal BIG due to the severe consequences the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the day-to-day struggles of many Namibians.

“Similar to the once off N$750 Emergency Income Grant that the government rolled out in March to cope with the slow down of the economy, the BIG, if implemented, will be a government social protection scheme through which all Namibians aged 19-59 will receive a cash payment of N$500 per person, per month as long-term effort to tacked extreme poverty that continues to plague Namibian and improve the people’s standard of living,” they emphasised.

According to the coalition they are reviving the campaign to ensure that government meets its obligations by implementing BIG in line with President Hage Geingob’s dream of eradicating poverty and improving the lives of all Namibians.

“We believe that BIG is a human right a sit eases pressure on people through being the basic upon which people can secure basic human needs and live a life worthy of human dignity,”they explained.

The Coalition is led by the Economic and Social Justice Trust (ESJT) and aims to fight for a decent living standard of all Namibians and to work with government to realise the implementation of BIG.
