Road accident statistics paint a bleak picture – President Pohamba

President Hifikepunye Pohamba has called on the Namibian Police and other law enforcement agencies to increase their visibility and enforce the law on the roads this festive season.
He also called on all road users to obey the rules of the road and to promote road safety at all times.
Delivering a road safety message at State House on Wednesday, the President said that the statistics on road accidents from the MVA Fund paints a bleak picture as road accidents recorded in the country every year are just too many.
“This must change, one life lost through a road accident is one life too many,” he said.
The MVA fund this week released statistics recorded between 28 November and 12 December, which showed that 16 people have lost their lives while 279 people sustained moderate to serious injuries in the 123 vehicle accidents recorded over those 14 days. While altogether 450 people were killed in road accidents this year.
“Many of these accidents could have been avoided. Let us draw the lessons from these unfortunate accidents and promote safer motoring in all parts of the country. Those who violate traffic rules and regulations must face the full force of our laws. The laws are there to protect our road users,” said Pohamba.
He further urged all road users to report all kinds of risky behaviour on the roads on (061) 222 888.
“Each road user must take personal responsibility of their own safety. Make the conscious effort not to drink and drive. Do not over-speed, do not drive recklessly, always wear a seatbelt,” President Pohamba said.
