Namport receives large consignment of project cargo destined for Botswana
Progress on Botswana’s Mohembo Bridge will proceed to another level courtesy of the port of Walvis Bay, which recently received a large consignment of 10720 metric tonnes of project cargo destined for the neighbouring country.
Namport’ in a statement this week said it is expected to take 160 truckloads to transport the cargo from the port to the construction site in Botswana.
Mohembo is a small town in the north-western corner of Botswana, within a few kilometres of the Mahango border post with Namibia. It supplies a substantial human population most of whom lives on the opposite side of the Kavango river. To date, all traffic from Mohembo crossing the river had to make use of two large motorised barges departing from a makeshift landing platform on the river bank.
Botswana Dry Port official, Rodney Brussel said that the service delivery from Namport was satisfactory as the “consignment was delivered without delay”.
Namibia availed operational sites to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana as land locked countries to enable them to conduct business via sea to their respective countries.
A dry port is an inland inter-modal terminal directly connected by road or rail to a seaport and operating as a centre for the transshipment of sea cargo to inland destinations.
Meanwhile, the 1.2 km long Mohembo Bridge has been under construction since 2016 and upon completion it is expected to connect villages east of the river with the rest of Botswana via the allweather road that runs from Mohembo to Maun.
