Hunting season to commence in May

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism’ announced the 2019 hunting season during which the public will be allowed to hunt certain species as approved by the Cabinet.

The period from 1 May to 31 August has been approved for registered Conservancies and commercial farms of the size in extent of not less than 1000 hectares which are enclosed with a game proof fence.

While the period from 1 June to 31 July has been approved in the case of farms, the size in extent of not less than 1000 hectares which are enclosed with an adequate fence.

Cabinet approved huntable game birds described in Annexure B and mentioned in Schedule 6 of the Nature Conservation Ordinance 1975 (Ordinance No. 4 of 1975, as amended) which may be hunted on commercial farms and registered Conservancies with a game bird quota by virtue of a written authority granted in accordance with Section 32 of the said Ordinance, and the species and numbers per hunter per day during the periods as described in Annexure B.

Meanwhile, Cabinet also approved the establishment of an inter-Ministerial Committee to identify ways to improve beneficiation to communities from the extraction of natural resources in communal areas.
