Ronnie’s Car Wash wins 2013 Top Score 7-a-side
“When we lost the first game we went back to the drawing board to do our homework and we never looked back after that”, commented captain and owner of Ronnie’s Car Wash, Ronnie Gertze. The action started on Saturday at the Ramblers Sports Grounds in Pioneerspark, with 32 teams competing for the coveted title of best company soccer team in the country. This year, close to 70 teams entered the popular tournament, which is sponsored by Namib Mills. This year’s other two quarter finalists consisted of 7-a-side powerhouses, CB Enterprises and The Namibian, who all provided spectacular soccer throughout the tournament.
For the first time since the tournament’s inception the School of Medicine team’s supporters walked away with N$7000 cash and a trophy for the Best Supporters of the Tournament. This award was based on feedback received from the tournament’s organising committee and Namib Mills. The Top Goal Scorer for this year’s finals was Maboss Ortmann, from Ronnie’s Car Wash team. Players, supporters and families also enjoyed the activities presented during the finals and young and old were entertained by music, jumping castles, food and cold beverages, which were available throughout the day.
Since the group stages were completed the weekend before, this weekend’s action consisted purely of the knock-out phase of the tournament, which meant that a team was out of the running as soon as they lost a game. While the original schedule indicated that both Friday and Saturday would be utilised to determine this year’s winners, some excellent scheduling by the organisers enabled the knock out, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals to be played on Saturday only. The day’s activities also included fun and games for spectators.
