The stellar growth of the University of Namibia reflects in the impressive student numbers cited at this year’s academic opening ceremony, held on Wednesday.
This year the university registered 17,058 students, a 1% increase from last year’s figure of 16,819. Also speaking at the event Vice chancellor Professor Lazarus Hangula commended the University on its achievements.”We are working towards implementing a memorandum of agreement between the Ministry of Defence that will see us offer new degree programmes such as in Military Science in the not too distant future. This will provide an opportunity for people in the military to obtain higher qualifications in various areas of national security. We are also excited that for the first time, students of our Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology will graduate this year. This is a major milestone in the history of the university and the country. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the students and staff of our Faculty of Engineering and IT for working hard to make this a reality. We can’t wait to see our own engineering graduates” he said.
Whining on behalf of the students, SRC president Nahas Enkono complained about the shortage of updated library books as well as the need for a second book shop on campus. Naming these as part of his list of challenges facing UNAM, Enkono said students have complained abut the rudeness of sales personnel at the university.
As part of his official opening address, Enkono said there is a need for examinations criteria to be reviewed in order to avoid a mix up of examination dates and times and that the examination timeslots should be reviewed.
Professor Hangula concluded by saying that the university’s Oshakati campus will offer training in bookkeeping for SMEs, a project for which the university has partnered with the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Ministry of Finance.
