Situated on the outskirts of Swakopmund on the road to Walvis Bay, the Desert Explorers Adventure Centre is one of the many spots that stands out with its bright colours, camels, tour guides and quad bikes well in sight.
Desert Explorers is famously known for attracting tourists from all over the world and when the Economist visited the site recently, it was clear why the adventure company has grown into a household name.
Our team was greeted by a warm staff, beautiful scenery and an enthusiastic crowd that had just received an in depth briefing on the many activities.
According to the Manager of Desert Explorers, Lorna Davis, the company is nearing peak season as December is at the doorstep and almost everyone is on holiday. “Swakopmund is famously known for quad biking and people come from all over the world just to experience this dynamic thrill of being outdoors. This is going to be a very busy season.”
The company, which changed owners in November 2010, has expanded and is now situated on the outskirts of the town from its previously inner city premises.
“Established many years ago” said Davis, “Desert Explorers has grown in capacity as well as the number of activities provided under its roof.”
The company is best known for its quad biking which offers both young and old something totally different from the norm. “This is where the ocean and the desert meet with splendid scenery and you get to connect with nature while you are at it.”
Since the proclamation of the Dorob National park the use of the dune belt is strictly controlled.  “Only registered tour groups can utilize the dunes between Swakopmund and Langstrand, The dunes between Langstrand and Walvis Bay can be driven by private individuals. Permits are required, and they are issued at the Ministry of Environment and at our offices.”
Desert Explorers has tourists coming from all over the world to experience once in a lifetime moments with its all in one activities. “We have visitors coming from all parts of the world especially South Africa whereby companies bring their employees for team building activities. And the numbers differ from season to season.”
Desert Explorers is definitely one of the must-do holiday activities when visiting Swakopmund.
With a staff of 25 enthusiastic young men and women, Davis said Desert Explorers is the ideal place for any young adult that loves being outdoors while the “explorer” tour is definitely something for the more reserved people. The only objective is to enjoy the desert flora and fauna.
Desert Explorers offers the following services: quad biking, sand boarding, Swakopmund tours, horse riding, paragliding, dolphin cruises, shore fishing, shark fishing, camel rides, scenic flights, kayaking,  team building activities, desert tours, and archery, amongst others.
