African Union’s Panel of the Wise to converge in Windhoek

The 18th Meeting of the Panel will take place in Windhoek at the Windhoek Country Club from 5-6 March and will be officially opened by the Vice President Hon. Nangolo Mbumba.

According to Selma Ashipala-Musavyi International Relations Permanent Secretary,the meeting will be attended by the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. Smail Chergui.

In addition, apart from the 5 members of the Panel of the Wise, Friends of the Panel, which consists of former Heads of State and Government; former Secretary Generals/Chairperson of AU Commission, are also expected to attend.

The Panel of the Wise is one of the critical pillars of the Peace and Security Architecture of the African Union and elected members serve a three year term.

The Panel comprises of various former Heads of State and is Chaired by the former President, H.E . Hifikepunye Pohamba.

The mandate of the Panel is to support and advice the effort of the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the AU Peace and Security Council in the area of conflict.

Furthermore, the Panel also assists the AU Commission in mapping out strategies to address threats to peace and security by providing regular advice and analysis.
