Schoolboy guns down fellow learner at school

A 13 year old Grade 5 male student at limbili Combined School in the Ohangwena region lost his life after he was shot by a gun at school on Thursday.

According to the Education Ministry in a statement the incident happened when a 11 year old student took a fire arm to school and while playing with the firearm during breaktime, fatally wounded a classmate which resulted in the untimely death of the learner.

Education Permanent Secretary, Sanet Steenkamp in the statement said that at this stage the Ministry can only communicate the established facts as a police investigation of the tragic circumstances is currently underway.

“The Ministry is finalising the School Safety Framework that speaks to an atmosphere of trust, peace, respect and care in the school environment and which will be rolled out soon,” she added.

Meanwhile the Education Minister, Katrina Hanse Himarwa, joint by the Management of the Ministry as well as the Ohangwena Regional Directorate, conveyed their heartfelt sorrow and most sincere condolences to the bereaved family and the affected school community.
