Long Course Gala attracts 112 swimmers

A total 112 swimmers took to the water and competed in 875 events in the first Bank Windhoek Long Course Gala for the season over the weekend at the Katutura Municipal Swimming Pool.

The Long Course Gala consists of four events that are held during the annual swimming season.

The clubs participating in the gala are Aqua Swimming Club, Dolphins Swimming Club, Namib Swimming Academy and Marlins Swimming Club.

Eliphas Nakaleke, from Aqua Swimming Club, proved to be the star over the weekend by breaking the record for the 50 metre butterfly section in a time of 41.33 in the boys 8 and under category.

We are happy with the turnout and the first Bank Windhoek Long Course Gala was a success. We also had more entries in the under 8 category, 15 in total, of which five of them are 6 years old,” said Phinelia Stergiadis, one of the organizers of the event.

We would like to thank Bank Windhoek for their generous assistance and also the Namibian Swimming Union (Nasu) for hosting the event.

The Economist does not have a dedicated sport reporter. This designation is used for several contributors who want their sport stories in the Economist. Experience has taught us that companies usually want their sport sponsorships published prominently, being the reason for a sports category. It now also carries general sport items but only those with direct Namibian relevance. - Ed.
