MTC guns for 100% population coverage
Telecommunications company, MTC, in efforts to bring customers closer to the digital era as well as augment government efforts on this goal, launched the 081Every1 Project this week.
MTC’s Board chairman, Elvis Nashilongo at the launch said that the firm through the project seeks to achieve 100% population coverage of the country through nationwide project investments.
“The current state of our communications infrastructures in the country is good, and last year we did the 4.5G trial, an indication that we value keeping up with latest technologies,” he said.
Shilongo however noted that there is much more that needs to be done and MTC will invariably find and employ measures necessary to better transform how communication is experienced in the country.
According to Shilongo they aim to achieve this by ensuring that they invest in the latest robust and agile technologies.
“We are aware that most people in rural areas are still not part of the digital divide, and we have redoubled our efforts to include them by having launched the Osmartphona campaign last year, an ongoing project where we rolled out highly subsidized smartphones to give rural Namibians access to the digital world,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shilongo said that in terms of investments since 2007, MTC has invested over 104 million US dollars in 2G/3G/4G technologies and the construction of new Base Transmitters’ Stations and equally so, they have also invested over 18 million US dollars to upgrade their Core Systems, while they have also ensured that they build their own transmission network capacity to the tune of 30 million US dollars.
