Model United Nations Namibia mock games set

The United Nations Information Centre Windhoek with the support of the Ministry of Education and MTN Business Namibia will host the 6th Annual Model United Nations High School Conference from 7-8 June.

The goal of this experience based programme is to find common solutions on the agenda topics through the approval and signing of resolutions.

Participants acquire various practical skills through the “learn by doing” approach, such as public speaking, drafting official international documents such as resolutions and position papers.

United Nation’s Information Center, spokeswoman, Welda Mouton, said the two day conference event will be held at the Safari Court Hotel and Conference Centre, the event simulates the UN General. Assembly, and will bring together high school students from various backgrounds as they step into the shoes of diplomats for two days.

Model United Nations programmes engage in teaching students on the work of the United Nations. Participants act as delegates of member states, replicating the debates and discussions held within actual UN committees.

Team work and leadership skills are also a requirement for working in groups to find solutions and lead blocs of nations who share a common stance, research skills and adapting to working in a multi- cultural environment given that there are participants from over 100 countries in the world.

The Model United Nations Namibia High School Conference enlists learners from different school backgrounds to participate in a discussion on major world issues. The main focus of the conference is for the delegates (learners participating) to abandon their personal opinions, understanding, and prejudice and thus cultivate arguments in a new manner.

Learners from high schools within the Khomas, Hardap and Oshikoto Region will participate in this year’s conference.
