Portuguese language and culture celebrations to grace Windhoek

In an effort to promote the common language and culture shared by its members, the Community of Portuguese language speaking countries will celebrate the International Day of Portuguese Language and Culture on 11 May.

To commemorate the occasion in Windhoek, the Embassy of Angola, the Embassy of Brazil and the Embassy of Portugal organised a joint multicultural event with entertaining cultural performances from each of the three countries at the Warehouse Threatre.

On Thursday evening at the Portuguese residency, Ambassador to Namibia, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa said the event will involve cultural performances from Angola and Brazil, culminating with a concert by Portuguese singer Filipa Pais.

“Filpa Pais is recognised as one of the best Portuguese performers, she comes to Windhoek with two Brazilian musicians, long settled in Portugal,” she added.

Pedrosa said the Embassy of Brazil will present a musical Quintet of ‘Bossa Nova’ composed by local musicians. Furthermore, the quintet will be preceded by the presentation of a group of the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira.

“The group will also incorporate in its exhibition some chereographies of “Axe Music”, a musical expression of the state of Bahia where Capoeira emerged,”she added.

Meanwhile, in terms of other Portuguese related activities, Pedrosa said the Portuguese government currently is assisting Namibia with the training teachers at University of Namibia and the provision of scholarships for Namibian citizens to be trained as teachers of Portuguese as a foreign language.
