The FNB Foundation and the Regional Psychological Support Initiative – REPSSI, have signed a partnership deal in which the professional skills of 40 community-based caregivers will be improved while at the same time the capacity of 100 lifeline counselors will be enhanced.
These counselors will be enabled to provide psychosocial support to children and their families through outreach programmes and face-to-face counseling.
FNB has pledged N$915,230 over a three-year period aimed at improving the professional skills of the 40 community based caregivers through the distance learning programme on Community Based Work with Children and Youth.
According to Jane Katjavivi, chairperson of the FNB Foundation “the overall goal of the 3-year programme is to create a cadre of skilled community-based workers who can provide care, support and protection to children and their families, who are affected by HIV/AIDS, conflict and poverty.”
REPSSI, a non-profit organisation formally launched in May 2002 is currently operating in 13 African countries including Namibia. REPSSI promotes an enabling environment for communities and families in east and southern Africa to preserve, nurture and restore the psychosocial well-being of children and youth. The Teachers’ Programme in Psychosocial Care, Support and Protection will be offered over an 18 month period, designed specifically for community-based care workers.
