Prof Katjavivi visits Indian counterpart in Lok Sabha

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Lower House in the Parliament of India, last week received the Namibian Speaker of the National Assembly as guest.
Hon Sumitra Mahajan was the hostess for a visiting Namibian delegation lead by the Speaker, Hon Prof Peter Katjavivi.

Prof Katjavivi was accompanied on his visit to India by several Members of Parliament and other parliamentary officials.

In a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Mrs Mahajan on Monday last week, the two speakers reiterated the bond of friendship and solidarity between the two countries and focussed on issues of mutual interest.

In particular, the two Speakers talked about the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two Parliaments. The Indian Speaker proposed parliamentary cooperation to help with capacity building of Namibian parliamentarians, and the sharing of experiences in parliamentary practices and the interaction with civil society.

During his visit, Speaker Katjavivi observed proceedings in both Houses of the Indian Parliament. A banquet was hosted by the Indian Speaker in his honour.

Prof Katjavivi also met with the Indian President, HE Pranab Mukherjee and the Vice-President, Hon Hamid Ansari on 28 March 2017.

On the academic front, he met the Vice-Chancellor and interacted with faculty members while visiting the Indira Gandhi National Open University. Later the Speaker and his delegation paid a visit to the legendary Taj Mahal.

The Indian High Commission in Windhoek said the visit of the Speaker of Namibia to India provided an opportunity to continue the momentum of the historical State Visit of the Indian President to Namibia in June 2016.
