German military cargo plane to land in Namibia

APA-Windhoek, A German military cargo plane, a Transall C160 of Air Transport Wing 61 of the German Armed Forces in Penzing in Germany, is expected at Hosea Kutako International Airport outside Windhoek on Saturday.

The German embassy in Windhoek said on Thursday that the visit is part of a cargo delivery flight to its missions throughout Africa, including delivering two spare engines for trucks that the German Military Advisory Group in Namibia is using for its projects.

“Departing from Sao Tome, the aircraft is scheduled to land in the afternoon of 01 April 2017 at Hosea Kutako International Airport and will depart on the morning of 02 April 2017, heading to Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania),” the embassy said in a statement.

This would be a second visit by a foreign military vessel to Namibia in just over a week after the Russian navy made a historic call at the port of Walvis Bay last Saturday. The Severomorsk, a large anti-submarine destroyer, flanked by her two escorts, rescue tug Altay and replenishment tanker Dubna, visited Namibia for the first time.

The destroyer, which is part of the Russian Federation Navy’s Northern Fleet detachment, first made a port call in South Africa, before heading to Namibia after it took part in international AMAN-2017 sea drills in the Arabian Sea in mid-February.
