One of the country’s biggest medical equipment wholesalers, erongoMED, says it is a challenge to  convince big international medical suppliers to provide them with an extensive range of medical equipment because the local market is small in comparison to more advanced countries.
According to erongoMED’s General Manager, Rick Coury, their biggest challenge as a medical and equipment wholesaler is finding willing suppliers since Namibia is a small country with a small population, therefore it is difficult to convince companies to become suppliers.
“Our country is like a small town in the United States, and convincing major medical supply companies to look at Namibia with its small population is a difficult task. Companies do not want to supply our company because the market is small, and this is problematic.”
He said they had to convince suppliers to look at the whole southern African market because it is a growing market. On the positive side, he added that while demand for medical supplies is often unstable and going down in other countries, local demand has been stable as more people acquire access to health care.
“I personally see bright colours out there. Our economy is already classified as a middle-income country and as access to better health care grows, so will the medical equipment market, and investors will have more faith in investing in this growing economy,” said Coury.
erongoMED, a pharmaceutical and an all-inclusive medical supplier is one of four major medical supply warehouses operating country- wide providing services and products to about thirty four hospitals and clinics.
Coury added that although they are a profit-driven business, they are more than just a medical equipment warehouse. “We aim to add value to the health fraternity as well as to supply a lot more than just the products and equipment.” They provide quality medical products to the medical community at affordable prices so that people from all walks of life can afford health services.
“We want to provide quality products at a reasonable price. We have qualified staff and we also provide all kinds of training. erongoMED has helped train hundreds of nurses and doctors on the use of sophisticated medical equipment.” Medical professionals are also trained with regards to infections control and safety aspects when dealing with potentially hazardous cases and diseases.
The company commands extensive technical expertise for the operation of the equipment it sells. For instance, advanced testing equipment like the widely-used ECG monitor where a high level of technical expertise is required, is kept in a serviceable condition backed-up by erongoMED.
The company also funded the German surgical team that visited the country earlier this year to operate on about 30 patients suffering from various afflictions.
