The combination race is an initiative by the Physically Active Youth (PAY) in conjunction with T-Rex Triathlon Training Tribe. Organiser Jason Frost said they came up with this sports event so that they can empower and involve the Katutura community in a cycling and running race, similar to the races that normally take place in Olympia.
He said that they are hoping to receive a good attendance at the registration point between 07:00 and 08:00. “We are getting a positive feedback from the general community. People seem keen on the event as it is the first of its kind and we are expecting a good number of participants.”
Frost said that this is a professional race and if it goes well, they aim to turn it into an annual event.
Thirteen cyclists from PAY will be participating of which 8 are juniors (17-19) and 5 elites(20-39). Frost said all people from different age groups are encouraged to register and take part in the event.
The cyclists from PAY said they are looking forward to this first of its kind race and shared their excitement on the event saying that they are looking forward to a day filled with great competition and fun.
Fiffy Kashululu, winner of the Duathlon race in his category at the race that took place in Olympia earlier this month said “I am a bit nervous but proud of my achievements as a cyclist. This time, just like the last event, I will maintain my title and hope to break my own record.”
He added that because the race is taking place in his community, they have home ground advantage over those that are coming from other parts of town to participate in the race.
