St George’s Mini-World Cup hockey winners

Three of the eight teams that entered from St George’s for the annual Mini-World Cup Hockey tournament which took place last weekend at the Doc Jubber hockey fields made it to the final round.
The U/8 Girl’s team drew in the final and came 2nd by goal difference. The U/10 Girls achieved 1st place while the U/10 Boys drew in the final and came 2nd by goal difference.
Riette Hanekom, Principal of St George’s said that they are proud of the hockey teams and thank supporters and the Big Brag teams.
“Despite freezing cold weather, the hockey players and spectators had tremendous fun and this action-packed event achieved its goal: promoting a love for hockey and engaging all schools in a team sport.”
The school has also won the coveted Ambassadorial trophy for their great performance at the Big Brag.
Hanekom explained that during the tournament, each school represented a country and entered teams in the various age groups. Included in the fun was a Big Brag, held on the Friday evening where each school promoted their country by performing a small play or song,advertising a cool drink brand.
At the Big Brag, schools/countries usually have a mascot, decorate their stands and promote their chosen country. Each of the participating schools stood an equal chance to win the Ambassadorial trophy depending on their performance at the Big Brag. This year, St George’s represented Holland, entering eight teams and with their Fanta cool drink brand and giraffe mascot, were crowned winners of the trophy.
